Teen Videos from Daniel Marr to be shown at Dorchester Days
If you've noticed a crew of young videographers walking the streets of Dorchester, filming anything and everything in sight, they are probably participants in the brand new Teen Video Project at Daniel Marr Boys and Girls Club. Launched this year as a community outreach project of Arts on the Point, the public sculpture park at UMass Boston, and under the supervision of Liz Carney, Director of Arts at the Club, ten students have met two evenings a week with Ann Torke, film and video teacher from the UMB art department faculty, to learn how to make their own films. The state of the art equipment, provided as part of the project, has enabled students to go well beyond the home video technology.

Liz Carney is pleased that the project has brought a new medium of self-expression into the art program - one which is immediate and accessible for teens. "This class has attracted new students to art making, because film as an art form naturally includes the narrative and the personal, and as such, is a welcome and much needed medium for teens." Student Kate McDermott agrees, "The best thing about this project is that I've learned how to express myself through film."

According to teacher Ann Torke, the students, whose "energy has been infectious, - have produced some great work which gives a real sense of the rhythm of Dorchester". The first public screening will be on Dot Ave during Dorchester Days. All are welcome to come by, meet the young artists, and see the fruits of all their labors.

To CSHCA Membership,
As some of you may have read already, the Mayor has a new initiative underway called Boston Shines 2003. It will partner our corporations and institutions with the residents of Boston's neighborhoods resulting in the largest organized volunteer cleanup in Boston's history.
Boston Shines will take place on June 14th from 8:30am-2:00pm.

We are now working on getting volunteers and corporate partners, as well as targeting the areas in our neighborhoods that need the most help. Dorchester will be broken down by its smaller neighborhoods, i.e. Savin Hill, Lower Mills, etc. We need help in all of the neighborhoods that each of you represent so that at the end of the day Dorchester really looks great. This effort is going to be targeted at not only cleaning the city, but beautifying it as well. We are partnering with BostonParks2004, a volunteer group working to beautify all of the parks in Boston in preparation for the Democratic National Convention next summer.

If any of you would like to volunteer, or would like to put together a team of volunteers for a specific neighborhood, please let me know. Also, if any of you own or work for companies that would like to donate equipment, tools, or people please give me a call. I have attached the link to the website. Feel free to pass this on to anyone that would be interested in participating in Boston Shines.
