COLUMBIA - SAVIN HILL
By Anthony M. Sammarco

Dorchester's oldest neighborhood is Savin Hill. A neighborhood composed of architectural styles that range from the James Blake House on Columbia road, which is Boston's oldest house, to Victorian mansions, bungalows, three deckers, and numerous other styles. The neighborhood is often described as one of the most interesting. Originally Known as "Rock Hill" for the glacial deposits, and later as "Old Hill" because it was first settled in 1630. The area was renamed "Savin Hill" in 1819 by Joseph Tuttle, proprietor of the Tuttle House, a fashionable seaside hotel on Savin Hill Avenue.
