October 2003 Items that missed the printed issue: New Office Address for Congressman Lynch Congressman Stephen F. Lynch Marine Industrial Park 88 Black Falcon Avenue, Suite 340 South Boston, MA 02210 THE FRIENDS OF THE BOSTON CITY ARCHIVES PRESENTS A LECTURE BY NANCY S. SEASHOLES AUTHOR OF THE NEW BOOK "Gaining Ground: a History of Landmaking in Boston" Published by MIT Press "Fully one-sixth of Boston is built on made land. Although other waterfront cities also have substantial areas that are built on fill, Boston probably has more than any city in North America. In Gaining Ground historian Nancy Seasholes has given us the first complete account of when, why, and how this land was created." October 14th, 2003 6:00 PM Massachusetts Historical Society 1154 Boylston Street Boston, MA 02215 UMASS & BWSC Meet with Community Leaders The issue of the Boston Water and Sewer Commission's "Materials Handling Facility" has not gone away and the discussion has spilled out of our neighborhood and is now affecting our neighbors to the south. Remember the building they wanted to construct next to the BC High ball fields, at the entrance to UMASS? It was to replace the now outdoor facility that operates next to the castle-like building (Calf Pasture Pump house) behind the University, which stores catch basin dreading from throughout the city for drying. Since our elected officials interceded to nullify any plans to relocate on the Point, UMASS and BWSC have set their sights on an area in Clam Point bounded by the expressway, Freeport St., Victory Road and Phillips Old Colony House. The University is leading the relocation effort because they want to restore the Pump house as an Environment and Technology Center. I attended a meeting with leaders from Clam Point, Pope's Hill, Neponset and Cedar Grove, hosted by UMASS, BWSC and other interests on the Point. The community leaders roundly rejected this development for the primary reason that they have been working for too many years on projects that would make the area more desirable to both residents and potential businesses. This area also hosts the Harbor walk link between Malibu and Tenean Beaches. Despite the loud opposition to this relocation, there was no definitive outcome to the issue. But, an elected official who was present suggested that it is not yet time to "call out the troops". Stay tuned. - PFN VOTE...VOTE...VOTE Don't forget to Vote in the City of Boston Municipal Elections Final on Nov. 4th! Polls are open from 7 AM to 8 PM. Dorchester Day Celebrations Committee The Dorchester Day Celebrations Committee is hosting a Reception in appreciation of the Honorable Stephen F. Lynch, Congressman of the Ninth Congressional District. The event will be held at the Philips Old Colony House in the Windsor Room on Thursday October 23rd from 7 - 9 p.m. There will be hors d' oeuvres, a silent auction, and cash bar. Tickets cost $30.00 per person and all proceeds are to benefit the Dorchester Day Celebrations Committee. The Dorchester Day Celebrations Committee is a group of volunteers who give their time and energy to plan various events to continue the tradition of celebrating the Founding of Dorchester in 1630. The first Dorchester Day was celebrated at Savin Hill on June 25, 1904. The idea of "Dorchester Day" was to bring the area residents together annually in remembrance of the Puritans landing and the history of Dorchester. The present day Celebrations are a continuation of this idea of community and the sense of home allowing the residents of Dorchester and those who left, but still consider themselves residents of Dorchester, to gather together to remember the past and to celebrate the present of the whole Dorchester Community. The money we raise will go towards funding: The Meatloaf Kick-Off Dinner · The Annual Landing Day Observance · The Little Miss Dorchester Pageant · The Dorchester Day Essay Contest · The Youth Day Event · Decorate Your Wheels and others...
