DORCHESTER DAY PARADE COMMITTEE
- DOTOPOLY
Do you wish to be immortalized?
Then read on.
As many of you know the Mayor of
Dorchester Contest and the $10,000.00 Drawing are two of the
largest fundraising mechanisms for the Dorchester Day Parade Committee.
It is at this time that I would like to introduce yet another fundraising
idea. I would like to invite friends of Dorchester to be immortalized
on the first Dorchesteropoly game board; DOTOPOLY.
What is DOTOPOLY? It is a custom
game board that will secure your place in Dorchester's rich history.
By supporting the Dorchester Day Parade, a person, a business, or a loved
one can be included in this unique opportunity. What is the requested
donation needed to secure your place in Dorchester's rich history and insure
our success?
Here is a list of available opportunities:
. Property/Business Square $500.
(40 available)
. Bank/Money $1,000. (one available)
SOLD
. Back of Fate Cards $300. (16 cards
only one sponsor) SOLD
. Individual Fate Cards $100. (5
available)
. Draw a Cards $300. (16 cards only
one sponsor) SOLD
. Individual Draws $100. (5 available)
. Business Patron $100. (limited
space)
. Individual Patrons $50. (limited
space)
Why would one be interested in donating
funds for a space on the board? In addition to supporting the Dorchester
Day Parade, one would get an outstanding value from the game. Unlike
other advertising venues, this advertising is permanent and is targeted
to the local families in our community. We will create 750 games.
Which means for a donation as little as fifteen cents to seventy-five cents
per game you could reach seven hundred and fifty families' homes.
We believe the continuing exposure whenever the game is played and the
recognition of supporting the Dorchester Day Parade is the unique opportunity
of this custom game board DOTOPOLY; and at the cost of less than a cup
of coffee!!
As a friend of Dorchester, it is
my hope that you will join us in supporting the Dorchester Day Parade and
at the same time help create this unique game board. Any questions
please call Mike Mackan @ 617-298-2051.
PLEASE RESPOND BY SEPTEMBER 15, 2001!
Thank you,
Michael B. Mackan

For all you new mothers out there

have all kinds of activities for the kids! For information call the coordinator,
Sister Nancy @ 617-282-5621
Welcome Babies ? This is a
great program offered by Dorchester Cares. A representative
will visit your home bearing gifts for you and your newborn (up to 4 months
of age). They also provide most helpful parenting information, support
and resource links. Call: 617-474-1143 to learn more about this wonderful
FREE service.

PLANNING COMMITTEE REPORT
Several proponents came before the
committee this summer and some of them will appear before the full
association this coming year.
A more detailed report will be available at the September 10th CSHCA meeting
but, a few highlights follow.
The new owners of 215 Sydney Street
appeared before the Planning Committee on August 13th. They would
like to work with the community to find an appropriate use for the unoccupied
building. They are seeking to change the current zoning so that they
can continue to use the existing billboards on top of the building.
This group will attend our September 10th meeting to review their plans.
Dependable Cleaners is seeking to
add an outside sign at its Dorchester Avenue location. They discussed
with the Planning Committee on July 9th a proposal for an illuminated
4í x 8í sign. The committee has asked them to consider a less obtrusive
sign. Dependable Cleaners will return with a new proposal in the
Fall.
The user of the lot at 8 Crescent
Avenue seeks to allow the premises to be zoned as a parking lot for six
vehicles. A proponent from that group discussed his plans with several
neighbors at our July meeting. Because there was a discrepancy between
how he portrayed the lot, and what is actually taking place, primarily
in regards to security and cleanliness of the premises, he was asked to
defer his Board of Appeals hearing and to continue to work with the community.
He plans to attend our September general meeting.
Any member of our civic association
is welcome to attend a Planning Committee meeting. To become a member
of the committee, we ask that you attend three meetings in a row to get
an understanding of the issues and then not miss more than three consecutive
meetings in order to maintain continuity.

DORCHESTER RECYCLING COALITION
The fall has come, and it's time
to return to our regular routines, especially recycling. In traveling
the neighborhood, I see many homes with their blue bins on the sidewalk
on trash day. That is encouraging, but I also often notice a very
common mistake. Many people put their paper products in the blue
bin with the glass, metal and plastic. This is an error.
Paper (pretty much everything but
pizza boxes is recyclable) needs to be broken down to the footprint of
your blue bin and placed under it for pick up. Plastic bags from
the supermarket cannot be put with your blue bin, but they can be returned
to the recycling box at the grocery store. Better yet, ask for paper
bags so you have somewhere to put your paper recycling. If you haven't
yet begun recycling, start by calling 617-635-4959 to have your blue
bin delivered. There is no more personal way to be a caretaker for
the environment.
I'd also like to remind people that
televisions and computer monitors (CRT's) are no longer allowed in the
regular trash any longer. The Salvation Army will pick it up for
free if you call (781-231-0803). Otherwise they can either be taken
to the Goodwill drop-off on Melnea Cass Blvd. Or the Sanitation Dept. will
arrange for a pick-up. Call Sanitation @ 617-635-7574.
Finally , I'd like to remind everyone
that the city conducts six weeks of yardwaste pickup in the fall beginning
on Saturday, October 27th. So what should you do with those grass
clippings in the meantime? Compost, compost, compost! You wonít
find a richer source of organic fertilizer anywhere. Till next timeÖ
