Announcements 

  1. Happy New Year! Please remember to renew your membership for 2019.  Dues are $10.00 per individual and $5.00 for those who are seniors.  Merchant memberships are $25.00. Fees can be paid at the membership meeting or via US mail. The form and mailing address are in this website: CSHCA membership form
  2. Residential Tax bills have arrived. Please remember to file your residential exemption application to save you over $2,700 on your primary residence. Details on how to file can be found at: City of Boston Residential Exemption Process
  3. Winter Weather Guide for 2019. Do you know the rules around removing snow from your sidewalk? Saving parking spots? Reporting un-shoveled walkways and streets? Please visit the City’s comprehensive guide with contact info to understand more: City of Boston Winter Weather Guide
  4. Short Term rental law was signed by the Governor in December. The law now requires any short term rentals (e.g., Airbnb, VRBO, Homeaway, etc.) booked effective January 1, 2019 for stay starting July 1, 2019 to be subject to the same tax rate hotels pay today. The tax rate is a state rate of 5.7% plus a Boston local tax rate of 6.5% — for a total new tax of 12.2%. Rentals greater than 31 days are not subject to tax. More details on the legislation and other requirements can be found here: MA Short term rental legislation
  5. The Martin Richard Foundation is looking for our younger folks ages 5 to 22 years to submit ideas for bringing their communities together to promote peace and kindness thru service projects. Information and submission form can be found thru their website: MR8- Youth Service Project ideas
  6. Recreational Marijuana – request for information. The CSHCA executive board will participate in a conversation with other Dorchester civic groups to combined efforts to understand this growing industry and hosting agreements these organization execute with the community.
  7. Robert Quinn Award at UMASS Boston. Nominations are due by January 21, 2019. Nominations from the CSHCA will be made at the membership meeting. For more information, visit: Robert Quinn Nomination form
  8. Holiday THANK YOU. We received overwhelming support from our small businesses that we raffled off while also enjoyed donated foods and treats.  They include: Stitch House, Savin Bar and Kitchen, Banshee Pub, Harborpoint Liquors @ Star Market, Avenue Liquors on Savin Hill Ave, Savin Hill Specialty Wine & Spirits on the Ave, UMASS Boston, Coleen Flowers, Dorchester Market, Bale Bakery, Dorchester Brewery, Dorchester Historical Society, Dependable Cleaners, Savin Hill Fitness – New business at 110 Savin Hill Ave, Dotdogs, and Dot Block

Speakers

  1. Mark McGonagle from the BPDA will provide an update on the Glovers Corner initiative as to where they are in the process and what has been accomplished to date the the remaining timeline. The next community meeting is scheduled for January 16th which will focus on environmental sustainability at 6:00 pm at DotHouse, 1353 Dot Ave. To learn more, visit: Glover Corner Updates and Next Mtg details
  2. The executive board will provide an update on community benefits initiative around the large developments occurring in the neighborhood and our plan to contribute to how these funds should be spent in the neighborhood.
  3. Livable Streets and Boston 2030 have started the process to evaluate Columbia Road. A discussion on the goal and scope of the project will occur. There is a survey the community is being asked to complete to evaluate Columbia Road.   4. A New Restaurant in Savin Hill. Ken and Driscoll may present an update on the available restaurant space currently under construction.
